No fewer than three modified Alfa Romeo P2's arrived
for the 1930 Monza GP to do battle with the Maserati's
and Bugatti's. Their engines now bored out to 2006cc
put them in the same class as the potent Maserati 26M.
Contracted to race with Pirelli tyres it became clear
during practice the cars would not be competitive - the
Pirelli tyres breaking up and losing treads with alarming
regularity. Ferrari declared they would withdraw their
cars however after a high level intervention the P2's of
Nuvolari, Campari and Borzacchini lined up for the final.
After an exciting start with Nuvolari in 2nd place a pit
stop on lap 6, quickly followed by Campari and
Borzacchini all with shredded tyres, the decision was
made to withdraw the cars from the race.
Maserati took a 1-2-3, racing on Dunlop tyres.
