1922 Indianapolis 500 - Winner - No.35 Jimmy Murphy
After his sensational victory at the French Grand Prix in 1921, (the first
American in an American built car to ever win a Grand Prix) Jimmy Murphy
purchased the winning Duesenberg and had it re-engined it with a Miller to
race at the following years Indianapolis 500 mile race.

The new car christened the
Murphy Special  took pole position and won at an
average speed of 94.484 mph. In another motor racing first this was the first
time the race would be won from pole position.

In front of an estimated 135,000 crowd the
Murphy Special  headed a
dominant race for Duesenbergs where they took 8 of the top 10 places.
